RÁN OFFSHORE: Nimble Strength in Offshore Barge Operations
Rán Offshore is expanding its horizons, sending part of its fleet to West Africa to support complex offshore energy operations. In an unpredictable market, this consistent problem solver is building on a strong reputation as an ISO certified barge specialist.
For more than a decade, Rán Offshore has established itself as a trusted name in offshore barge operations, building on the vast personal experience of CEO Lars Bjerke Tho and Chartering Director Trym Gade Lintoft, who both has spent three decades in the maritime and offshore industry. The company, though deliberately small, has developed a reputation for agility and dependability in a market that demands speed, flexibility, and precision.
“Our core business is barge operations. We have four standard North Sea barges, the Greenbarges and one 400 feet barge, the Rranbarge 1. Additionally, we purchased a tug in February, the RAN NOVA. The plan is to operate that alongside the barges for longer-haul towage,” explains Bjerke Tho. From its North Sea base, the company has expanded steadily, taking on increasingly complex projects while remaining lean in structure and operations.
He adds: “I was the CFO for Boa Offshore for 15 years before working for Greenway Shipping for a period, and then establishing Rán Offshore and moving the barge operation over to that company, so I have been in the industry for 30 years. Going forward, we are always on the lookout for opportunities and we will continue to keep our ears to the ground.”
With a history rooted in offshore service and a present that is increasingly global, Rán Offshore’s journey has been shaped by pragmatism, ambition, and trust in its small but highly capable team.
EXPANDING HORIZONS
While the North Sea has long been Rán Offshore’s home, the company’s footprint is now spreading to new geographies. “Historically, we work in the North Sea as that is our home area, but the last few years has seen us working across West Africa. This year, we are sending two barges to West Africa and the remaining three into the Mediterranean. Currently, we are happy with our presence and will stick to these areas,” says Bjerke Tho.
The move into West Africa reflects broader market trends, where energy operators seek reliable partners to deliver vital offshore support across both oil and gas, as well as emerging renewable projects. Infrastructure development across West Africa’s offshore sector is rising, and Rán Offshore’s ability to bring well-maintained barges and trusted crews into the region gives operators confidence in project delivery.
This strategy of steady, deliberate expansion is underpinned by the purchase of the new tugboat earlier this year, strengthening the fleet and allowing greater control of towage activities. As activity levels rise, the new vessel ensures that the company can support long-haul operations with its own assets, enhancing both efficiency and reliability.
“We have strong relationships with some clients that we have been working with for the past 10 years. We will always continue to build on those relationships, and we follow our customers wherever they need us to go,” Bjerke Tho affirms. This client-first mindset has ensured a constant flow of repeat work and long-term partnerships, making Rán Offshore a dependable ally in an industry often defined by rapid shifts and high pressure.
MARKET MOMENTUM
Despite global energy markets being notoriously difficult to predict, Rán Offshore sees a strong and improving barge market, one that is driving optimism within the company. “The barge market has been slowly improving over the past five years with 2023, 2024 and 2025 being good. We expect 2026 to be good too. The rates have been slowly climbing back to 2013/2014-levels and we are very positive at the moment,” says Bjerke Tho.
This positive outlook, coupled with measured growth into new geographies, positions the company well for the coming years. With an industry in transition – particularly across offshore energy, where oil and gas operations are being balanced with the emergence of offshore wind and renewable infrastructure – companies with specialised, flexible capabilities like Rán Offshore are increasingly in demand.
The company’s deliberately compact size allows it to make decisions quickly and operate with an agility that larger organisations sometimes lack. “We are a small company so it is always busy,” Bjerke Tho smiles. “We are versatile and we can handle everything quickly and easily, and we also like to be nimble and not have layers of approval to make decisions. It is a short-term business which is hard to predict and never know what the next year will look like,” he says. “The barge market is per definition a spot-market”.
In offshore logistics, unpredictability is the norm rather than the exception. Projects can be won or delayed at short notice, weather and regulatory factors can change schedules, and global market conditions can swing rapidly. Rán Offshore’s model of flexibility and readiness means it can adapt quickly to change, protecting its clients from disruption and securing its own competitiveness.
TRUSTED NETWORK
Underpinning operations is a tried and tested network of skilled engineers and long-standing suppliers. “We have two very skillful ballast engineers with many years of experience who handle most of the maintenance of the barges, who are kept in Rotterdam when they are not working. Those engineers are also hired to clients for ballasting/de-ballasting as part of the package, if that is required by our clients,” explains Bjerke Tho.
The Rotterdam base is also central to supply chain efficiency, thanks to long-established relationships. “We have a trusted group of suppliers, mainly in Rotterdam, who we have been working with for 15 years. We know what they deliver and they know the speed at which we work. We are very happy with that situation currently,” he says.
This reliability ensures that Rán Offshore can keep vessels operating at peak condition while maintaining the agility to respond quickly to client needs, wherever the project may be. In an industry where downtime can lead to major cost escalations, the value of such relationships cannot be overstated.
Beyond its own resources, Rán Offshore’s reputation for reliability has been cemented through this consistency. Clients know what they can expect, suppliers understand the expectations, and the business maintains a rhythm of delivery that builds trust across the value chain.
NORTH SEA FUTURE
While global expansion and new markets are part of the growth story, the company is clear that its heart remains in the North Sea. For decades, the region has been central to Europe’s energy security and will continue to play a vital role in the transition ahead, even as regulatory pressures and environmental goals reshape its profile.
Reports from industry groups such as Uplift UK highlight that the North Sea is undergoing significant change, with oil and gas output declining, but investment in renewable projects, particularly offshore wind, increasing. This creates a complex environment where operators and service providers must balance traditional activities with new opportunities.
Rán Offshore, with its fleet and team of specialists, will remain a key contributor in this environment. “We will always continue to build on those relationships and we follow our customers wherever they need us to go,” Bjerke Tho reiterates, highlighting the company’s ability to adapt to whatever the future of the North Sea may bring.
The importance of versatility will only grow as projects diversify. Barges and towage services are required across oil, gas, decommissioning, and renewables, and companies that can provide trusted support will be vital to progress. With decades of experience behind it, and a forward-looking approach that embraces change, Rán Offshore is well positioned.
As the energy landscape evolves, the combination of experience, client trust, and an agile operating model ensures Rán Offshore is well placed to navigate uncertainty. For Bjerke Tho, it comes down to a clear philosophy: staying nimble, moving quickly, and maintaining the relationships that have defined the company’s first decade. In an unpredictable industry, that balance of expertise and adaptability may be the strongest anchor of all.
